Country Music & Quilts, Remembering Mom

You know that song Forever Country?  When that particular song comes into earshot it takes me back to my childhood.  I grew up listening to good ol’ country music.  It was Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride, Dolly Parton  and many other wonderful musicians.

My mother used to have vinyl records and the radio was on most of the time.   My childhood wasn’t full of beautiful memories, perhaps that is why this country music holds such a dear place in my heart.  My Mom loved to dance as do I.  She was her happiest I think when she was able to cut a rug.

Recently I have started a quilt project.

quilt-blocksThe few times I did quilt it was with my mother, treasures for my own children.  Most of the time she was leading me and then she would put the finishing touches on it.   Of course I wish I would have stopped and made her show me how to put the batting and backing on now. It’s a good thing there are classes online to purchase and husbands that are master carpenters that cut with precision! 🙂

I can’t help but sit at the sewing machine and think of Mom.  It was hers and now mine. There are tubs full of scrap fabric and crochet thread galore from her home. I will never be the seamstress or crocheter she was,  I know this.  But having these things that she held in her hands, well it gives me a little peace.  Sorta like the country music.

Material items won’t change things or fill space in my heart.  They do help me to remember the woman I called Mom though. I’m thankful for that.

Grace is a gift,
