The Hodge Podge Quilt Project

As a quilter of only about eight years I find myself with many many scraps of fabric. Some are fat quarters while others are five inch squares and then there are the odd pieces. Towards the end of 2023 I found myself inspired to take all my scraps and make quilts to donate. I even bought this handy fabric cutter when it was on sale in the fall. It is pretty cool when you have several pieces to cut. My husband likes it too.

The thought of cleaning up and out my quilting room was motivation, a fresh start to new year! The week of January 8th I started pulling all of it out, setting up an extra table in my room and hiring my teenage daughter to help me. She has very little interest in quilting or fabrics but she does like to have money to spend. 🙂 It’s a win win for both of us! She has begun ironing fabric scraps and I am organizing them.

My plan is to get it all ironed, sort “types” that are already things like fat quarters, ten and five inch blocks and smaller pieces cut into two and half inch blocks. Once I have it all cut and sorted I will move forward with quilt plans.

Today I had the idea perhaps others would like to participate. Having my three daughters, two sisters and a few friends over for a girl’s day of cutting and maybe a little sewing blocks. I feel like this could be a project that not only lifts others in receiving a warm homemade Hodge Podge quilt but all of us as well! Socializing is a lovely thing among friends! I already feel inspired and it feels good to know I’m not just letting fabric collect dust.

I haven’t set a goal of the number of quilts, so it could be two or six. I’m committed but I’m not to the extent of stressing myself out. I am excited and at some moments wondering if I can do this. I am looking forward to growing in this project both mentally and in my abilities in quilting.

When I think of the hodge podge quilts I think of quilts from years and years ago. Where it was made out of necessity not just as a hobby. Although the fabrics may not match there can still be something found in it that is beautiful and warm.

I’ll try to keep you posted, I wanted to be sure to document my journey. So this is a start back to blogging as it has fallen to the wayside the past couple years. Feeling inspired and hoping it continues to help me grow!

Thanks for stopping by!

Julie

One of my favorite quilts I’ve made. I use it daily!
