Fall Harvest 2018 Starts!

The combine header has been changed a couple times and been running in the past couple weeks! A two fields of corn were harvested and one field of grain sorghum or what we like to call milo! I love the color of milo, it’s so pretty but it also very itchy!

 

First let’s chat about the corn that was harvested. I am going to be honest – it kinda sucked so far. We normally like to see non-irrigated corn around a 100 yield this field made 75 to 82.

Primary reasons = Mother nature. Lack of moisture.  But it is what it is and there isn’t anything this farm family can do about it. We will just pull our purse strings tighter, borrow money if we need to and pray for strength in this time of farming difficulty. I couldn’t pull my husband away from this farm if I wanted. His roots are deeply planted and will never be harvested.

The field of milo that we started harvesting on August 29th we didn’t get very far on before a breakdown occurred. The combine’s bevel gears went out and so the farmer had to head back to the farm yard. The next day he made a parts run and got to harvesting!

This field of grain sorghum produced a pretty nice yield of 102.  We won’t complain about that at all!  This is the first year we have produced a crop on this field.  We have a new landlord and it is a field that I can see from my front porch too!

 

The other fields are not quite ready and we also received a great deal of rainfall in the past couple days.  Soon enough it will be a very busy time again.  Milton has to sow the wheat for the new crop and harvest the fall crops!
